Bergen Beach is one of the newer residential corners of Brooklyn. Much of it was built out in the second half of the 20th century, with detached and semi-detached one and two family houses, many with garages, finished basements and larger kitchens and baths than older parts of the borough. It sits on low, filled land along Jamaica Bay, with the Belt Parkway on the south side, Paerdegat Basin to the east and Mill Basin to the west.

Newer does not mean trouble free. These houses are old enough now that original water heaters, boilers and pump systems are reaching the end of their life, and the low ground means basements and below-grade garages depend on drainage working every time it rains. Hurricane Sandy pushed bay water into many homes here, and plenty of owners replaced equipment in a hurry afterward. We service those systems and the sewer lines that carry everything out to the street.

Common plumbing issues in Bergen Beach
Ejector pumps in finished basements
Many Bergen Beach houses have a bathroom or laundry in the basement that sits below the house sewer, so a sewage ejector pump lifts the waste up and out. When the pump or its float fails, the basement bathroom backs up fast. We replace ejector pumps, check valves and alarms, and we can add a high-water alarm if the pit does not have one.
Equipment reaching its age
Houses built in the later decades of the 20th century often still have their second or third water heater and, in many cases, the original boiler. Rust at the base of a tank, rumbling, or a boiler that short cycles are signs it is time to plan a replacement before it fails in January. We give free written estimates on replacement work and offer financing through Wisetack.
Systems replaced in a rush after Sandy
After the 2012 flood, many owners moved boilers and water heaters, raised electrical or added new pumps, and some of that work was done quickly. It is worth checking for missing check valves, poor venting, or gas connections that should be redone. A gas leak check and a look at the venting are good ideas if your equipment went in during the rebuild.

Plumbing in Bergen Beach: FAQ
Why does my basement smell like sewer gas?
Most often a floor drain trap has dried out, an ejector pit lid is not sealed, or a vent is blocked. Pour water into floor drains you rarely use. If the smell stays, we check the ejector pit seal, the vent and the house trap. If you smell natural gas rather than sewage, leave and call National Grid first.
How long should a water heater last in a Bergen Beach house?
A tank water heater commonly lasts somewhere around 8 to 12 years, depending on water use and maintenance. If yours is older than that, leaking at the base or making popping sounds, plan a replacement. We install A.O. Smith tank and tankless units and give a free written estimate.
Do you service houses that took water in Hurricane Sandy?
Yes. We inspect and repair pumps, boilers, water heaters and gas piping in houses that flooded, including work done during the rebuild. If your basement still takes water in heavy storms, we can camera the sewer and look at pump and check valve options.
