Nationwide Plumbers is a NYC-licensed master plumbing company working throughout Bedford-Stuyvesant, the brownstone and limestone rows on Macon Street, MacDonough Street, Decatur Street, Hancock Street and Halsey Street; the Stuyvesant Heights and Bedford historic districts around Tompkins and Stuyvesant Avenues; the blocks surrounding Herbert Von King Park, Saratoga Park and Fulton Park; the commercial corridors along Fulton Street, Nostrand Avenue, Marcus Garvey Boulevard and Malcolm X Boulevard; the Weeksville blocks toward Ralph Avenue; and the newer mid-rise construction going up along Broadway and Atlantic Avenue. We hold NYC Master Plumber License #2023, we have worked Brooklyn since 1984, and we run 24/7 out of 6923 8th Avenue.

Bed-Stuy has the largest intact concentration of 19th-century row houses anywhere in New York City, roughly 8,800 buildings put up before 1900. Most of them are two-, three- and four-family houses, and a great many are owner-occupied by families who have held the deed for decades. That combination shapes every plumbing job here. You are almost never working on a vacant building, you are frequently working around tenants on the parlor and upper floors, and the systems in the cellar are often original cast iron and galvanized steel that has been patched rather than replaced for fifty or sixty years.

Common plumbing issues in Bedford-Stuyvesant
Decades of deferred maintenance in long-held family houses. This is the defining Bed-Stuy job. A house bought in the 1960s or 70s, kept in the family, maintained by whoever was handy, and now the current owner is refinancing, or the house has passed to the next generation, and forty years of patches have to be turned into a system that works and can be signed off. We are usually asked to do this in stages, on a budget, without displacing anyone. That is the work we do most here.
Cast iron waste stacks at end of life. A stack in an 1890s Macon Street brownstone has been in service well over a century. Cast iron corrodes from the inside out, so the first sign is almost always a ceiling stain one floor below a bathroom, not a visible crack. In a three-family with tenants, this is planned staged work, one riser at a time, water back on the same day. See cast iron stack repair in Brooklyn brownstones.
House traps and slow drains across the whole house. When every fixture backs up at once, the blockage is downstream of all of them, the house trap in the cellar or the clay lateral running under the front yard to the Fulton Street or Nostrand Avenue main. Roots at a clay joint are extremely common on these blocks. We camera the line and show you the footage before anyone opens a sidewalk. Costs and options are broken down in our Brooklyn sewer line replacement guide.
Galvanized risers and top-floor pressure. Original galvanized steel supply lines narrow with scale until a top-floor shower runs at a trickle while the parlor floor is fine. If pressure is worst upstairs and worst in the morning, the problem is your risers, not the street main. See why water pressure is low in Brooklyn buildings.
Rental units that were never filed. Cellar and garden-level apartments added over the years frequently have plumbing that was never permitted, improvised venting, a kitchen sink tied into an undersized waste line, a below-grade bathroom without an ejector pump. When an owner goes to legalize, refinance or sell, that work has to be brought to code and filed by a licensed master plumber. We assess, price it, file it and get it signed off.
Landmarked blocks. Bed-Stuy contains several historic districts, Stuyvesant Heights, Bedford, Expanded Stuyvesant Heights, plus the small landmarked courts. Interior plumbing is generally not Landmarks' concern, but sidewalk excavation for a sewer lateral, or a new exterior vent or condensate penetration on a street facade, can add an LPC review step alongside DOB and DEP permits. We flag that at the estimate, not halfway through the job.
Frozen rear-extension pipes. Bed-Stuy row houses almost all have a rear extension, and extension walls are thinner and less insulated than the main house. Kitchen supply lines in those walls freeze in a hard cold snap. If the same pipe freezes every winter, the fix is rerouting or insulating it, see handling a frozen pipe in a Brooklyn brownstone.
Why Bed-Stuy owners, landlords and boards choose Nationwide Plumbers
- Licensed master plumber. NYC License #2023, permits pulled and filed, gas work pressure-tested and certified, work that survives an inspection and a closing.
- We work around tenants. Staged stack and riser replacement in occupied two-, three- and four-family houses is routine for us, not an exception.
- Diagnosis before demolition. Camera first. We would rather tell you it is the house trap than sell you a sewer replacement.
- Straight pricing on phased work. If the whole house needs repiping but this year's budget covers one riser, we will tell you which one to do first.
- Real 24/7 response, same licensed crew day or night.
- Brooklyn since 1984, out of a Brooklyn shop, not a call center routing to a subcontractor.

Plumbing in Bedford-Stuyvesant: FAQ
How fast can you get to a Bed-Stuy emergency?
Typically 30–50 minutes for most Bedford-Stuyvesant addresses, day or night, depending on traffic. Call 718-748-2727.
My whole house drains slowly at once. Is that the sewer line?
Usually it is the house trap or the lateral out to the main, not the individual fixtures. We run a camera before recommending anything, because a cleared house trap and a full lateral replacement are very different numbers.
Does my Bed-Stuy building need a Local Law 152 gas piping inspection?
One- and two-family homes are exempt, which covers a large share of Bed-Stuy's housing stock. Buildings of three units or more with gas piping are covered, on a four-year cycle set by community district, Bed-Stuy is Brooklyn Community District 3. We confirm your building's exact due date before scheduling anything.
My cellar apartment's plumbing was never permitted. Can that be fixed?
Yes. We assess what is there, tell you what has to change to meet code, and file the work under our master plumber license so it can be signed off, which is what a lender or a buyer's attorney will ask for.
Do I need a permit to replace a sewer line in Bedford-Stuyvesant?
Yes. Any connection to the NYC public sewer requires a DEP permit and a licensed master plumber, plus a DOT street-opening permit for the excavation. We pull and coordinate both. Interior stack work and house trap removal may need separate DOB plumbing permits.
