The pump had rusted out.
What we did
We pulled the old pump, set a new pump in the pit and reconnected the discharge line. On jobs like this, we check the pit and discharge arrangement when planning a replacement. The discharge line carries pumped water away from the pit.
Result
The replacement pump was set in the pit and the discharge line was reconnected.
